The Struggles of a Fundraiser: My Honest Story
Fundraising isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a journey filled with passion, persistence, and plenty of challenges. When I founded the American Dream Center in 2017, I had no idea just how difficult raising funds would be. I believed in our mission wholeheartedly, but belief alone doesn’t pay the bills.
The Hardest Part: Finding and Keeping Donors
One of the biggest struggles I faced as a fundraiser was finding new donors. At first, it felt like shouting into the void—reaching out to people who had never heard of our organization, hoping they’d catch the vision and decide to support us. Even when I found donors who resonated with our cause, keeping them engaged was a whole new challenge.
Donors have so many options for where to give, and if we don’t nurture those relationships, they move on. I had to learn—sometimes the hard way—that fundraising isn’t just about asking for money. It’s about building long-term connections and showing people that their giving truly makes a difference.
The Reality of Burnout
The pressure to raise funds, hit goals, and sustain our mission took a toll on me. Burnout is real, and for fundraisers, it can creep in fast. The emotional weight of rejections, financial pressures, and the constant need to be “on” was overwhelming at times. I found myself exhausted, questioning if I could keep going.
How I Overcame Burnout
I learned that to be an effective fundraiser, I had to take care of myself first. Here are some things that helped me push through:
- Setting Boundaries – I had to create clear work-life boundaries and give myself permission to rest.
- Finding a Support System – Surrounding myself with other fundraisers and mentors who understood the challenges made a huge difference.
- Remembering the Mission – When I focused on the impact we were making, it reignited my passion.
- Investing in Learning – The more I improved my fundraising skills, the more confident and less stressed I became.
The Lesson: Becoming a Better Fundraiser
Looking back, the struggles I faced helped shape me into a better fundraiser. I learned how to build stronger donor relationships, how to tell our story in a way that inspired action, and how to sustain myself for the long haul.
